What is Bufo?
Ancient Connections, Modern Science
Bufo, commonly associated with the Sonoran Desert toad (Incilius alvarius), is a powerful psychedelic substance containing 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (5-MeO-DMT). Native to the Sonoran Desert of northern Mexico and the southwestern United States, this remarkable amphibian produces a defensive secretion containing one of the most potent naturally occurring psychedelics known.
Scientifically, 5-MeO-DMT is a short-acting tryptamine that interacts primarily with the brain's serotonin receptors, particularly 5-HT1A and 5-HT2A. Its effects can include profound changes in consciousness, altered perception of time, dissolution of the sense of self, and experiences described as deeply spiritual or transformative. Researchers are investigating its potential therapeutic applications, although evidence remains preliminary.
Culturally, the toad's homeland overlaps with the ancestral territories of Indigenous peoples, including the Comcaac (Seri) communities of Sonora, Mexico.
Their relationships with the desert, its wildlife, and traditional ecological knowledge deserve recognition and respect. However, claims that smoking toad-derived 5-MeO-DMT is an ancient Indigenous ceremony are not well established historically.
Despite its potential for profound experiences, 5-MeO-DMT carries serious medical and psychological risks, including dangerous interactions with certain medications. Responsible education, harm reduction, ecological conservation, and respect for Indigenous communities are essential to understanding this powerful substance.
Where modern neuroscience meets cultural respect, responsible exploration begins.

BUFO FOUNDATIONS
Science, Safety & Harm Reduction
Bufo Foundations is a science-based educational training designed to build a strong understanding of Bufo Alvarius and its powerful psychoactive compound, 5-MeO-DMT.
Participants explore the history, neuroscience, pharmacology, and physiological effects of this remarkable substance.
Special emphasis is placed on medical contraindications, medication interactions, participant screening, emergency preparedness, and responsible harm reduction.
Through interactive discussions and real-world scenarios, students learn to recognize potential risks and understand the importance of preparation, informed consent, and integration.
This training provides the essential scientific knowledge and safety principles needed to approach Bufo education with confidence, responsibility, and respect.
One Medicine.

BUFO IMMERSION
Culture, Tradition & Hands-On Learning
Bufo Immersion moves beyond the classroom to explore the cultural, ecological, and experiential dimensions of Bufo Alvarius. Participants deepen their understanding of the Sonoran Desert, the natural habitat of the toad, and the knowledge and perspectives shared by Indigenous communities connected to this region.
Through guided demonstrations, hands-on educational activities, and meaningful discussions, students explore ethical practices, conservation, ceremonial considerations, and the responsibilities associated with facilitation.
Emphasis is placed on developing awareness, cultural humility, practical judgment, and a respectful relationship with the medicine and the communities surrounding it.
This immersive experience brings together cultural learning, practical education, and personal reflection while reinforcing the safety principles established in Bufo Foundations.
