Bufo hapé (bufo rapé) is a small-batch ceremonial blend I make by hand: Nukini hapé and jacaranda, finished with the ash of bufo burnt as a whole piece. It carries the strength of a traditional hapé with the deep, smoky aroma of the desert.
Lore of the Sonoran Desert toad. The Sonoran Desert toad (Incilius alvarius) spends most of the year sleeping beneath the dry earth. When the summer monsoon breaks over the desert, it rises with the rain, sings in the flooded washes and disappears again. For the Comcaac (Seri) people, whose ancestral lands stretch along the Sonoran coast and the Sea of Cortez, the desert and its creatures are relatives to be honored, never simply taken from. This blend is made in that spirit of respect.
The ceremonial way of hapé. Across the Amazon, peoples such as the Nukini, Huni Kuin and Yawanawá have shared hapé for generations: a sacred snuff of tobacco and the ashes of trees and plants, blown with a tepi (from one person to another) or a kuripe (self-applied). In the shamanic tradition, hapé is a prayer as much as a medicine of the forest, used to ground, to bring the mind into the present and to open sacred space.
Intention. Hapé is received, not just taken. Before you serve it, sit quietly, hold your intention in your heart, and give thanks to the plants, the animals, the land and the people who have carried these teachings. I use this blend as an opening hapé before Bufo ceremonies, to set the space and call in presence.
